The story so far...

1992   The seed of an idea

The idea of developing an ecological data centre for the North and East Yorkshire region has been around since the early 1990's when the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust promoted the concept.

It was not until the mid-1990s when further impetus for the idea came from English Nature, North Yorkshire County Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, North York Moors National Park, Environment Agency and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, who came together to form a steering group.

1995   The idea comes together

In 1995 the steering group, through English Nature, commissioned a feasibility study to examine the possibility of establishing an ecological data centre for the area.

The study, based on extensive market research amongst the potential data providers and users, was carried out by the Somerset Environmental Records Centre. This concluded that the project was feasible and that an independent body should be established to develop and run a centre.

1999   The Centre is born

Subsequent work by the Steering Group focused on establishing and funding of an appropriate organisation.

The resultant organisation was the North and East Yorkshire Ecological Data Trust (NEYEDT), a registered charity. The North and East Yorkshire Ecological Data Centre (NEYEDC) forms the operating function of NEYEDT.
